Kappa Alpha Theta Philanthropy

Standard

This past week, the sorority Kappa Alpha Theta hosted a dodgeball tournament in efforts to raise money for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA). These advocates help neglected and abused children through the sometimes messy legal processes. It is an amazing program that helps such an important cause, and has raised over $800,000. My sorority, Pi Beta Phi was invited to participate in this event and donate as much as we can. I attended Kappa Alpha Theta’s percentage night at Slickables where there was an amazing turnout. The line stretched all the way down Mill Avenue and some people were waiting for over two hours. So many members of the Greek community were present and the amount of money each organization spent, the more points were awarded.

The following morning, a double elimination dodgeball tournament took place with a turn out of over 10 teams! Combined with t-shirt sales, percentage night sales, week long donations and the dodgeball winners, a final winning team was calculated. It is important to strategically plan an event to this size and consider what the best location is. Taking proxemics into consideration and the fact that this was an assembly type event, Theta decided the best option was the large tennis courts by Sonora. This worked well, the weather was nice and everyone fit comfortably. Another important thing to take into consideration with an active event like this is safety as taught to us by Sergeant Mike Pierce and Kevin Renwick.

It is important to organize and manage large crowds, as well as having first aid kits on site in case any participants become injured. All in all, this series of events was a success and raised a lot of money for an extremely important and overlooked cause. I am proud to say that my sorority Pi Beta Phi were the Panhellenic champions of this annual philanthropy. We participated in the dodgeball tournament and donated and spent the most money at the percentage night. Events like this are so fun and productive, bringing together the entire Arizona State community together for the purpose of charity and making the world around us a better place.
